Out with the Old, In with the New! Social Media Trends for 2020

And just like that, we’ve reached the final newsletter of the year and decade – as Rachel Green would say, it’s like the end of an era!!! We are SO grateful for all of the love, support and feedback that we’ve received since the launch of this newsletter back in May – we honestly wouldn’t be here without YOU, so thank you!

Before we throw confetti and pop champagne, we wanted to close out the year by looking at some of the most talked-about predictions for Social Media trends in 2020!

Metrics like total likes, page views, number of followers… they don’t really matter. Repeat after us – just because someone follows you does not mean they’re engaged with your brand! It’s (almost) 2020 people… time to dig a little deeper! Word on the street is true engagement metrics will be the focus in 2020 and beyond. These numbers (total comments, shares per post, engagement rate per follower, etc.) tell you what content is truly performing for you, what’s just “meh”, and what will provide real opportunities for growth!

Video continues to be one of the most important trends in the social media world. From Stories, to IGTV, to TikTok and YouTube, social media users are realizing that video content is a clear winner over all other types of content! According to Social Media Today, 82% of all online content will be video-based by 2022. If you’re thinking to yourself, ‘Wow, I need to get on board with the video marketing trend,’ you’re right! More and more social media platforms are looking for ways to prioritize video content, so you might as well take advantage now!

Technological advances are happening faster than ever, and social media marketers are starting to take advantage! Virtual reality (VR) allows users to engage with audiences in a new and exciting way, build brand awareness, and enable people to interact with your products. Brands like Sephora and IKEA have created augmented reality (AR) tools that let people virtually try on lipsticks or place furniture in their homes without having to be there in person. Umm, how cool is that?! It not only helps users feel more comfortable and confident buying furniture online, but it’s also a fun experience!

Did you know that influencers with between 5,000 and 10,000 followers have an engagement rate of 6.4% compared to the 2.4% for larger influencers?? These smaller influencers offer a greater level of personalization and stronger engagement because they have smaller, better-defined audiences. Not only that, but users are more likely to follow and trust an influencer they feel connected to rather than a faceless brand! Learning how to leverage these micro-influencers in your social media strategy will be key in 2020.

We hope that you find these predictions to be super helpful as you start to create your social media game plan for 2020! Shameless plug: if you’re confused or not sure on how to re-vamp your social media strategy for next year, we’re here to help you! Connect with us and let’s get social 🙂

We don’t know about you but we have a feeling that 2020 is going to be a GOOD year! We hope you all have a happy and safe New Years!! XO
